Mimosa Hostilis Tree

Mimosa Hostilis Tree

Mimosa Hostilis Root Bark is derived from a perennial tree that grows in an area stretching from northern Brazil to Southern Mexico. It’s known to have a wide variety of incredible health, beauty, medicinal and spiritual benefits to humans.

The tree grows quickly (around 5 feet per year), is very resilient, provides food and shelter for wildlife and fertilizes the soil around it, encouraging other plant growth. The tree’s lumber is extremely hardy and resistant to rot, making it a popular choice for construction. Small, stringy, white flowers bloom at different times of the year depending on which hemisphere it grows in. The tree is also known as: mimosa tenuiflora, jurema preta, calumbi and tepezcohuite.

Mimosa Hostilis branch

Mimosa Hostilis Branch

The branch of the tree resembles a fern with many small, parallel leaves branching out from a thin center stem. These branches can be used to make a natural tea to alleviate tooth pain and other minor aches. The tree can be successfully and legally grown in the United States southern region and along the west coast. As we’re based out of the frigid Midwest, we likely won’t be attempting to grow mimosa hostilis ourselves, but here’s a link to some nice instructions on how to grow mimosa hostilis from hunker.com

MHRB Chips

Mimosa Hostilis Root Bark Chips

However, the most popular and exciting part of the mimosa hostilis tree is its root bark (MHRB). MHRB can most commonly be purchased in chipped, shredded or powdered consistencies depending on desired use. Its high tannin content gives the inner root bark a deep red color that turns into a beautiful light purple when dry. MHRB is controversial as its high alkaloid content has been used for centuries as a psychedelic and hallucinogen. It has historically been prepared by shamans in the form of ayahuasca for spiritual ceremonies. More recently, it was discovered that highly potent DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine) can be extracted from MHRB. Users report experiences of traveling to other dimensions and interacting with spirits or aliens. While the experience is generally perceived as therapeutic, we highly recommend against preparing and consuming your own ayahuasca or DMT as it can be a very traumatic experience without proper mental preparation, correct dosing and guidance from an expert. Also, while MHRB itself is legal, the moment you extract DMT from it, it becomes a serious legal offense in most countries. There are various safe and legal ayahuasca retreats and ceremonies around the world that you may be able to attend if interested in these experiences. One example in the USA is Aya Quest.

Instead, our website is focused on exploring the various amazing and legal benefits of MHRB:

Natural Dye

With its 16% tannin content and vibrant colors, mimosa hostilis root bark is a highly popular ingredient for all-natural dyes.  With historical use in ancient civilizations, MHRB is still used in a wide variety of applications for cotton fabric dying and leather tanning. It’s well-known as a top choice for tie-dying. Additionally, beyond its cosmetic benefits, it provides clean, natural coloring for soaps and lotions.

Depending on concentration, MHRB-based dyes can result in beautiful shades and tints of purple and brown.

Skin & Hair Care

MHRB has incredible regenerative and rejuvenating properties for skin and hair, and as such, it’s very popular as an ingredient in designer lotions, soaps, shampoos and conditioners. However, the clever marketing and celebrity spokespeople tend to drive up the price for these products, so we recommend buying MHRB and making your own! Specifically, home soap-making can be a very fun and rewarding hobby.

MHRB has been known to effectively treat wrinkles, acne, blemishes, stretch marks and dandruff and promote hair growth and a healthy scalp.

Immune Support

A lesser known benefit of MHRB is its capacity for treating a plethora of common ailments. Depending on preparation and administration, it can be used as an anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, cough suppressant and pain reliever. It can even assist with hangover and drug withdrawal symptoms.

While we won’t promote MHRB as a cure-all or a replacement for traditional medicine, it is an exciting natural alternative for minor nuisances.

First Aid

MHRB powder is an awesome resource to keep in your first aid kit or bug out bag. Its antifungal and antimicrobial properties along with its high tannin content make it a great option for treating wounds and burns. It’s a natural coagulate, which can help stop bleeding while treating the wound. Mixed into a paste and applied to even serious burns can result in quick healing and often full regeneration of the skin, and it’s often used in this capacity in South and Central America.
